One of China’s most ambitious indoor winter‑sports venues yet is under construction with the Qingdao Guoxin Indoor Ice & Snow Sports Dome in Shandong, located south of Beijing on China’s East Coast.

Which has a price tag of RMB 970 million (USD 133 million / EUR 122 million) and although it won’t be one of the country’s 10 biggest, is being positioned as China’s largest city‑centre indoor ski facility.

A major draw is its architectural pedigree. The dome is being designed by Professor Zheng Fang, the renowned architect behind Beijing 2022’s Ice Ribbon speed‑skating oval and the Ice Cube curling venue. His concept for Qingdao applies “landscape symbiosis” principles to blend the structure into the surrounding terrain, creating a low‑profile form that rises with the slope and visually recedes from the main city thoroughfare.

The complex will span 74,000 m², anchored by a 38,165 m² indoor ski hall featuring a 252‑metre intermediate run with a 37‑metre vertical drop, alongside a 115‑metre beginner slope. A 2,500 m² snow‑play zone will offer tubing, ice igloos and ice sculptures, while two international‑standard ice rinks 31 m × 61 m and 30 m × 60 m will support figure skating, short‑track speed skating and ice hockey.

Supporting facilities include an ice‑and‑snow‑themed hotel, commercial precincts and year‑round operations powered by high‑efficiency cooling systems designed to reduce energy consumption by around 10% compared with traditional methods. Completion is targeted for the end of 2027.
