Finland’s New Purple Snow Centre
The new Purple Snow Ivalo Center has officially opened in Finnish Lapland, giving Nexen Tire and its partners access to one of the world’s most advanced winter‑testing ecosystems. The new facility, located inside the extensive UTAC proving ground in Ivalo, was recently showcased to European automotive media during an on‑site demonstration programme.
Developed to accelerate winter and all‑weather tyre innovation, the centre forms part of Nexen’s long‑term strategy to expand its European R&D capabilities. It includes a dedicated laboratory for analysing winter‑road surface characteristics and connects directly with Nexen’s virtual development systems, allowing simulation data to be validated immediately on snow and ice.
The precise size of the indoor facility has not been revealed but the Purple Snow Ivalo Center sits within UTAC’s vast cold‑climate testing hub, which offers more than 100 km of indoor and outdoor tracks, including 47 specialised snow, ice, wet and dry surfaces. Although thjere are other indoor winter tyre testing centres in Scandinavia, UTAC’s indoor winter environment is claimed to be the first of its type globally, storing snow from early in the year to guarantee 365‑day repeatable testing.
Nexen has secured a long‑term lease on its newly designed proving ground, which features snow‑handling tracks of varying gradients, a large flat track, and a dedicated studded‑tyre durability course, critical for markets across Northern Europe where 3PMSF‑certified winter tyres are mandatory in many countries.
The centre’s opening strengthens Nexen’s position in Europe, a region that accounts for more than 40% of its global revenue. By pairing indoor winter conditions with advanced simulation and outdoor Arctic testing, the Purple Snow Ivalo Center is expected to significantly speed up development cycles and support new OE partnerships.
