Mikaela Shiffrin Trains Indoors in Hamburg
The most successful ski racer of all time, Mikaela Shiffrin ,has been training with the U.S. Ski Team at the Alpincenter Hamburg-Wittenburg, one of Europe’s largest indoor ski facilities. The team also trained here last year.
Covering 30,000 square meters, the facility features two lifts, over 600 metres of trails, and a vertical drop of 56 meters. Though not suitable for speed disciplines like Downhill or Super-G, indoor centres are ideal for technical training—especially in high summer when glacier snow often turns soft under summer heat and most centres are closed.
From late May to mid-October, the centre offers dedicated race training, including up to six water-injected Slalom lanes equipped with B-nets. The FIS-standard terrain allows for around 10 runs per hour, meaning athletes can rack up 600–800 Slalom gates in two daily sessions. While Giant Slalom sections are possible, the slope isn’t long enough for full GS runs.
