About a Fifth of China’s 20m Skiers are Skiing Indoors

A new report has found that while China’s now 50 indoor ski centres represent 7.17% of the 697 ski resorts the world’s second-most populated country currently has in operation, they attract 3.43 million skier visits, accounting for 18.41%of the total 19.83 million skier visits China recorded in the 22-23 ski season.

The newly released 2022-2023 China Ski Industry White Book by local expert Wu Bin (Benny Wu) reports that while overall China’s skier visits dropped by nearly 10% last winter, indoor snow centres saw growth of 6.47% compared with 21-22.

China particularly excels in indoor snow and dry ski centres which have been built in the greater part of the country where natural snowfall doesn’t occur but here most of the world’s second biggest national population live.

“Pandemic fluctuations continue to affect the number of indoor skier visits. The impact of the epidemic has led to the intermittent closure of indoor ski resorts in some areas, resulting in serious discontinuities in operation. The data during this period cannot reflect the real situation of the market,” the Report states.

The report notes that the number of indoor snow centres in China has gone from around 5 to 50 in the space of a decade and that at least another 10 centres are currently under construction.

China is home to 5 of the world’s 10 largest indoor snow centres including the planet’s current three biggest.
